CUECS update- Michaelmas 2012

by Holly Murray

This term has been an exciting time for CUECS and there has been plenty going on with all of our projects.

The Green League Table Project has recruited a new computing team who have been working to improve the website that analyses data given by colleges to look at their environmental performance. The team have also developed novel ways to access data, including working with the University’s Carbon Reduction Commitment Officer. CUECS has just secured a sponsorship deal with consulting company IBM and will soon be investing in exciting new equipment such as thermal imaging cameras for GLT consultants to use.

The College Ball Sustainability Project has begun running workshops to train consultants to advise May Ball committees on how to make their events greener and started research sessions to develop a Ball Committee Guide. The team has already worked with Fitz Winter Ball this year- look out for our recycling workers there!

The brand new Ecology Project has got off to a great start and after an initial overwhelming response from local schools two have been selected to work with this year. The team have been researching ideas for wildlife gardens and have begun to develop workshop plans based around wildlife stations for bees, butterflies and creepy crawlies.

All of our projects are being supported by the newly developed research group. This term, researchers have been collaborating with GreenBRIDGE to produce a Best Practice Guide based on the excellent green technologies used by some colleges. The research group has also launched some bespoke consulting projects based on particular energy and water problems within the University.

There is plenty of opportunity to still get involved in any of the projects mentioned; in addition we will soon be opening applications for next year's committee, for more information about this or any of the talks and events run by CUECS please email
